Stop Sign 2.0

Why do all-way stop signs look identical to two-way stop signs? Those tiny rectangles below the sign don't count since they're so hard to see, and they're not even there most of the time. Why don't we make two-way stop signs visually distinct from all-way stop signs?

Of course, one very good thing about stop signs is how recognizable they are, because of their color and shape; we want to keep the signs recognizable yet make them distinct enough to make having different signs worthwhile. I therefore suggest using a different shape than an octagon for the two-way stop sign, but one that is not already in use for other signs. We should keep the color the same for two reasons: for people who can see colors it is a much more potent attention-getter than the shape; and color-blind people will still be able to tell the difference between the two-way and all-way signs. With that in mind, here are a few possible shapes for the two-way stop sign.

  • Oval-shaped stop sign
  • Plus-shaped stop sign
  • Diamond-shaped stop sign
